Since the earliest dawn of civilisation, human beings have happily lived in homes (or caves) with floor surfaces made from natural materials. The most natural of all being mud, which is still being used by many people around the world as a surface that retains heat in winter, and keeps things cool in summer. Since the invention of carpets, mud has understandably never really come back into fashion, but other natural surfaces are currently enjoying a resurgence in popularity.
