The Carpet Mill on Chesterton Road has an impressive range of natural surfaces which are being rediscovered for their own qualities of being hard-wearing, stain-resistant, sophisticated and tactile. Operating for more than 30 years in Cambridge, The Carpet Mill first opened in Mill Road in 1981, when it was part warehouse, part showroom, selling all types of flooring in an attempt to suit all pockets. It moved to its current premises in 2000, and a decade ago the showroom was revamped, the company investing in a variety of manufacturers’ stands, as it moved towards catering for the mid to high-end market. 

Owner Peter Day, who took control of the company in 1995, has a wealth of industry experience. Cutting his teeth at an international flooring manufacturer in the commercial field, dealing with mainly hospitals and offices, he went on to launch a flooring division for a Cambridge company, worked for a distributor, then spent time as a self-employed sales consultant at The Carpet Mill, advising customers on colours, fabrics and types of flooring. By 1995, he was more than equipped to take the helm. Today the focus is very much on quality, both in the branded products on sale (over 50 percent of the flooring in the showroom are still UK manufactured) and the expert fitting service. The Carpet Mill team are amongst the best in the county.
